Study: Income not as plentiful during holiday season

According to a recent survey from CouponCabin, 45 percent of U.S. adults will have difficulty affording holiday gifts this year. Tighter wallets have led more than 20 percent to say they'll be getting a second job to supplement their current income.

The study, held between October 7 and 11, surveyed more than 2,200 adults. And while nearly 50 percent of respondents stated they'll have trouble purchasing gifts, an additional two-thirds said they expect to have more problems with holiday spending this year compared to last year.

"The holidays are a wonderful time of year for numerous reasons, but for many people, the extra expenses can put a strain on their financial situation," said Jackie Warrick, president and chief savings officer at CouponCabin.com. "Holiday obligations, such as buying gifts, entertaining and traveling can add up very quickly."

Becoming a temporary worker at a retailer that's hiring for seasonal positions may be an option for those in need of additional income.

ABC News reports that a large number of well-educated individuals in their 40s and 50s have recently begun swallowing their pride and applying for seasonal jobs at Halloween stores or large retailers.
